How To Ship Cremains For a Memorial Piece
October 11, 2021
How To Ship Cremains:
Tools and Supplies you may need:
-
Placemat or paper: to catch any spills.
-
Screwdriver: to unscrew or pry the urn/container open.
-
Scoop or spoon: you can use a plastic spoon.
-
Scissors: to cut the zip tie or plastic bag inside the urn open.
-
New zip tie, or tape: to seal the ashes inside the urn again.
-
2 brand new small zip-lock sandwich baggies: to place your ashes inside.
-
Permanent Marker: to label your bags. *
-
Please Note: multiple items made with the same ash can be sent all in 1 baggie. Only a half of a teaspoon is needed for your 1 to 2 pieces of jewelry, we need only one small bag of the ashes. To help gauge how much to ship: 1 item = 1 thimble, 2 items = thimbles
On the two small zip-lock sandwich bags write both your name, the phone number and the order number (if known). Place no more than 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of ashes into the first bag and zip shut with most of the air out of it. Please make sure to label the baggies with a sharpie or a handwritten note with an order name and cell phone at minimum. We can match up your order this way when we get the package. DO NOT send ashes that can not be identified.
DO NOT MAKE EXTRA BAGS unless you have separate ashes from different cremains.
Place the first bag into the second empty bag and make sure both are zipped shut. Make sure as much air is removed as possible out of both bags... Tip: rolling the bag will remove air, then seal it shut when at the top.
Place the second filled bag into a third if you wish for extra security if desired.
Documentation And What To Ship:
A copy of the transaction receipt is preferred to be supplied with the remains. This is needed for identification purposes. Send only one per transaction.
-
Shipping USPS Express is the legal way to ship cremated remains. The Express parcel is hand-carried to our business and dropped off only with a signature and is insured.
-
Use a cardboard envelope or cardboard box. (DO NOT use padded or thin paper envelopes, they rip and contents fall out.)
-
Tape the seams of the box, poorly taped boxes arrive flat and crushed.
There are specific requirements for preparing, packaging, and shipping human or animal cremated remains. The Postal Service is here to help you understand how to meet these requirements and take the necessary steps to protect this special mailing. By following these requirements, you can be confident that you have done everything you can so that your loved one’s remains can arrive at the intended destination safely.
